Aphrodite (Roman name Venus) was the goddess of love, and beauty. She was also a protector of sailors. It was said that she was born of sea-foam. Homer on the other hand, said she was a daugther of Zeus and Dione. When the Trojan prince Paris was asked to judge which of these three olympian goddesses was the most beautifull, he chose Aphrodite over Hera and Athena.
Athena (Roman name Minerva) was the goddess of crafts and the domestic arts and also of war. Athena was originally the great goddess in the form of a bird. During this period, she had come to be regarded as a goddess of wisdom. Athena is the daugther of Zeus. She sprang full grown in armor from his forehead, thus had no mother. Her tree is the olive tree.
Artemis (Roman name Diana) was the goddess of the hunt. She helped woman in childbirth, but also brought sudden death with her arrows. Artemis and her brother Apollo were the children of Zeus and Leto. In some versions of their myth, Artemis was born first and helped her mother to deliver Apollo niobe, queen of Thebes once boasted that she was better than Leto because she has many children while the goddess had two.
Hera (Roman name Juno) was the goddess of marriage. Hera was the wife of Zeus and queen of olympians. Hera hated the hero Hercules since he was the son of husband Zeus so she tried to kill him once but she failed to do so. The second time she tried to kill him she sent snakes to kill him.
Demeter was the goddess of agriculture. Demeter was sister of Zeus and the mother of Persephone. One day Persephone was gathering wild flowers in the meadow when a huge crack opened up in the earth, and Hades King of Dead, emerged from underworld. He seized Persephone and carried her off in his carriage, back down his chariot down to the underworld. While she was down there Hades forced her to marry him, so later on she decided to become queen of underworld. Demeter was heart broken, she wandered the length and the breath of earth in search og her daughter, during the earth which time the crops wither up and were dieing of the cold weather.
